BIG EVENTS COMING SOON
First of all, the ice conditions on Long and Grand lakes are a big topic right now. And, right now we have up to 14 inches of ice in areas, and open water in areas. This is an unusual ice pattern, but it is due to the melting of the early snow, and rain we had earlier this winter. This is creating a current in the lakes and the open area should be avoided. As the water levels go down, the ice will reform, but we don’t know when. As of right now, some ice is already forming on parts of the open water. The good news is that fish are being caught on both lakes, and it looks like a very good year for catching fish. The general opinion is that you should stay a distance from the open water and look for other people who are fishing for advice as to ice conditions. Both lakes are very fish-able, but caution needs to be used with snow machines and quads. There are machines on the ice, as well as shanties.
The big events coming up are the two ice fishing tournaments on Grand lake, Feb. 14. One event is the 1,000 hole extravaganza, and information is available at fishalpena.com. The other event is the annual Grand Lake Association derby, the same day, and as of now I have no other information to pass along, but both events are worth going to for fun and prizes.
We are open 7 to 5 week days
7 to 3 Sundays
