SCHOOLS OUT, BOATS IN !

June 7th, 2015 by Budd

This past week we have seen some really lousy weather, with high winds, rain and cool temps. But Wait ! Here at the bait shop we have had a few folks going out onto Long and Grand lakes and they have come back with some very positive fishing comments. The walleye appear to be hitting very good right now on both lakes.Although not all the walleye are keepers by any means, some are, and the fact that more are being caught this year than last year at this times seems to me to look like a pretty good sign. Of course I’ve only been here for 22 years, but this sure looks good to me.The most common live bait has been night crawlers, and of course on a Lorie Rig, or a Lorie fly rig. The stick baits for walleye leaving here, anyway, are the Berkley Flicker Shads, and the all time original Hot’N’Tot. The depths so far have been pretty shallow, ranging from 6 to 12 feet. Cold air,[ water ] is probably the reason for this.
The bass fishing is spectacular as always, both lakes, and the main live bait again is the night crawler. These have been attached to either a crawler harness or a lead head for maximum success. The lures have been spinner baits, tubes, power baits, and top water lures like Hula Poppers and Jitter Bugs. Around the docks and shore lines are working very well for the smallies.
Pike have been hitting suckers, baby suckers, and Mepps Dressed lure, # 3,4,5.
Perch have been reported in, but not all that many. But Blue gills are coming in good, and that’s sort of a trade off. Gills are liking the perch size minnows, and tiny lead heads tipped with a leaf worm.
Say, don’t forget this weekend, the 13, and 14 of June is FREE FISH WEEKEND. You need no license to fish regardless of residence, and you must follow ALL RULES. DNR will definitely be available to check your catches, boats and safety gear.
So have fun be safe and stop in at the Bucks Bait Shop for bait and tackle, please.
