THE ICE APPEARS TO BE GOOD
After a period of rain and a record high of 57, we have settled back into cold air and the ice appears to have survived, according to our fishermen. Most say that where there was seven inches of ice there is still six inches of good ice, and there is some honey combs here and there, but by and large they show no fear of the ice, and are using spuds and good judgment by being cautious.. Most of my customers are going out when it is late enough to see the ice good. About 8 am as apposed to 7 when we open. We did not get any snow to harm the ice and the flurries we got highlight where there is ice and if there are wet or open areas. so far so good, and the ice is only getting better day by day. right now it is 14 outside. One problem that always occurs is the holes left on the ice that get bigger when it rains, then seal up with a good freeze like we have now. Those spots need special attention and should not be walked on or re-cut for a few days.
The fishing has been good too, for catching on both lakes, with all the old favorite spots still being just that. We have seen both pictures and fish brought ion for show and tell here. By far the most popular bait used here is the blues, but the greys are being used for those big walleye and pike.
Be careful and enjoy the lakes. Caution and checking the ice frequently is the key to survival right now.
