WE HAVE SOME ICE !

December 26th, 2012 by Budd

Today saw a good amount of customers at the shop, and most were going out to fish the bay areas, and expressed good indicators for ice thickness in those locations. What we are hearing  on Long Lake is that East Bay for example, in the north east corner, is producing some nice walleye and pike, using blues.  They are only in about 2 to three feet of water. The other bays seem to be having similar success and hopes are that with this cold air, and only one inch of snow, that the ice will quickly spread to the other areas by Friday. Grand lake seems to be doing the same thing. Black Bass Bay for perch, and we have heard a few folks speaking of other bay areas.

HUGE SINGLE PERCH LORIE RIG

A huge caution flag should be waving in your mind right now and rightfully so. First ice is always the best for fishing and of course the least reliable. this is why you’ll see folks out there with a spud, checking constantly, and even tempting fate a bit. But the good news is there is no warm up in sight for at least a week.  So this is the other up date I promised. We have good ice in the bays, little snow, and super cold air day and night now. And catching sounds good. We are selling bait to these folks, and tackle, and look forward to seeing you all soon. Be careful follow foot prints or tracks and look for others if you aren’t sure of the spot you want to fish in. Remembering that these lakes are about 5,600 acres leaves a lot of room for different stories of thicknesses of ice.  But most of our fishermen say by Friday they expect ice over the entire lake to be safe.
