FISHING IS GOOD ON LONG AND GRAND LAKES

February 2nd, 2012 by Budd

*******Feb. 8, 2012 update*****

We’ve had good cold weather lately and more coming . Enough cold air that the lakes appear to be in good shape for ice fishing, and making  more ice, according to some of our fishermen. 13 to 16  inches of ice in some areas. And some good catches of perch and walleye in some areas. And this is a fact, so take it as you like, there have been pick up trucks, cars, campers, quads, and snow machines on both lakes lately. CAUTION ! THE ICE MAY NOT BE 13 TO 16 INCHES ALL OVER. I’m just giving you a better picture of what we have folks.

Tournaments. The Reel Fun tournament, and the Grand lake Sportsman’s tournament  on Feb 18, will  happen for sure. That’s my latest news and it’s  only about a week away now. Also the DPI  employee tournament will be March 3 .

*******END OF UPDATE******

The fishing on both Long and Grand lakes has been good . Very nice Perch. Walleye and Pike have been caught on both lakes. The ice conditions, while worrisome to a lot of folks, has not deterred most from going out, being careful and staying away from unsafe ice.  This year has been quite  different with weather patterns, as you are aware of, with too many warm days and not all that cold at night, but cold enough to maintain some good ice in some areas.  There is little  snow to be found, but it does snow off and on at times.

Both lakes appear to have good ice [ 7 to 12 inches ] on the North ends. On Long lake there is bad ice  and open water at times around Brooks Highway and also known as  Little Gravely on the maps. Caution is the key word still for everyone, especially if you have not been here this year.

I would like to mention the discovery of a huge bluegill school on Long Lake this week. Lorie was fishing at Silver Weeds and when she dropped her Aqua View into the water she saw hundreds of  Gills. These  fish have been caught here every summer for several years, but this is the first time we have seen these beautiful fish in  such huge numbers in the winter. She said she measured the ice and there was at least 7 inches of  good ice. These Gills will bite on Wax  Worms, Spikes, and Wigglers, or Berkley Yum baits, and of course on the now famous, Lorie Rig Fly Rigs, sold right here.

There are two ice fishing contests that we know about. February 18, both contests, if ice allows. The Grand Lake annual sportsman’s derby, and the 1,000 hole tournament. We have tickets for the 1,000 hole tournament, [$25.00]and the annual Grand lake  derby is free. The 1,000 hole tournament is 12 to 3, and this year  they have a Chevy,  a Quad, 42 ” TV and a $500 cash prize thrown in.

Please be careful if you do go out, and have fun.

We are open 7 to 5, seven days a week.

Happy Ground Hog Day, Valentine’s day, and  FREE FISHING WEEK END, Feb 18, and 19, 2012.
