LONG LAKE WILL BE STOCKED AGAIN

October 7th, 2009 by Budd

THIS IS JUST AN UPDATE FOR YOU TO READ, SO THAT YOU KNOW WE ARE STILL ACTIVE HERE AND WAITING FOR ICE SEASON. THE FALL WEATHER HERE HAS BEEN SIMILAIR TO THE SUMMER. WE HAVE HAD A LOT OF RAIN, WIND, AND COLD WEATHER, FOR DAYS ON END. THE SUNNY WARM DAYS WERE FEW AND ENJOYED BY MOST.
HUNTING HAS DEFINATELY TAKEN A FRONT SEAT TO SPORTS ACTIVITIES NOW. WITH DEER AND SMALL GAME, AND THE NEW CROSS BOW RULES, HUNTING IS GOING ON IN RECORD NUMBERS AND FOLKS ARE EXCITED AGAIN, FOR THE MOST PART. I KNOW A LOT OF FOLKS ARE NOT HAPPY WITH THE BAN ON BAITING, AND SOME OF THE NEW RULES, BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS, SO WE HAVE TO ENJOY WHAT THERE IS OUT THERE.
THE LONG LAKE IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION IS GOING TO STOCK LONG LAKE WITH WALLEYE THIS NOVEMBER, USING PRIVATE FUNDING. WE HAVE SOME GRANT MONEY COMING IN, AND THE ASSOCIATION IS USING SOME OF THEIR LIMITED FUNDS AS WELL. WE DON’T HAVE A FIGURE YET AS TO HOW MUCH MONEY THERE IS, OR HOW MANY WALLEYE WILL BE PLANTED.
BUT IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE MONEY FOR PLANTING, THERE IS STILL TIME. THE FIRST WEEK IN NOVEMBER IS USUALLY THE OPTIMUM PLANTING TIME, DUE TO TEMPERATURE, LACK OF CORMORANTS AND PEOPLE ON THE LAKE.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE, PLEASE SEND A CHECK, MADE OUT TO “LONG LAKE IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION” AND MARK THE MEMO, ” FOR FISH” YOU CAN SEND THE CHECK HERE IF YOU’D LIKE, AT BUCK’S
8501 US 23 NORTH, ALPENA, MI. 49707. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THE CHECK OUT TO BUCK’S. THANK YOU
ALSO, MANY OF YOU MAY ALREADY KNOW THIS, BUT LORIE IS NOW THE VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE LONG LAKE ASSOCIATION. HER MAIN GOAL IN THIS NEW ROLE, IS TO KEEP THE LAKE STOCKED, AND HEALTHY. THIS INCLUDES FUNDING FOR CORMORANT CONTROL, AS WELL AS STOCKING. THIS IS A LEGAL STOCKING, SIGNED BY MDNR AND FUNDED 100 % BY YOU AND THE ASSOCIATION.
SOME PEOPLE ALWAYS ASK WHY WE HAVE TO STOCK THE LAKE OURSELVES, AND NOT DNR. WELL, WE DON’T HAVE TO, WE WANT TO. AND DNR HAS NO FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR US. WHEATHER YOU BELIEVE THIS OR NOT, WE WILL DEFINATELY NOT GET FISH STOCKED UNLESS WE DO IT. AND WE ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO GET A LEGAL PERMIT, SO WE WILL FOLLOW THROUGH WITH IT.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE PARTICIPATED IN HELPING, AND UNDERSTAND THIS PROCESS, THANK YOU. WE DEEPLY APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT, AS MUCH AS YOU APPRECIATE A LAKE WITH WALLEYE IN IT.
ANOTHER NEW AND WE THINK EXCITING DEVELOPMENT IN BOTH LONG AND GRAND LAKES, IS THE ABUNDANT BLUE GILL AND SUN FISH POPULATION. I WOULD HESITATE TO USE THE WORD “EXPLOSION” OF PAN FISH, BUT I DO KNOW THAT WHEN LORIE AND I FISHED SILVER WEEDS THIS SEPTEMBER, WE CAUGHT ONE BLUE GILL AFTER ANOTHER. THE ACTION WAS STEADY, AND WE WERE JUST USING NIGHT CRAWLERS, AND LORIE RIGS.
BOTH LAKES NOW HAVE ABUNDANT NUMBERS OF PAN FISH. WITH THIS IN MIND, THIS WINTER OUR STORE WILL CARRY WAXWORMS, SPIKES,MOUSIES AND MINNOWS, AS WELL AS WIGGLERS, FOR THESE FISH TO BE CAUGHT.
IF I SOUND EXCITED, WELL, I AM. I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT WINTER ICE SEASON, SO BRING IT ON.

WE WILL REOPEN BY NOVEMBER 28.

LORIE AND BUDD
