ABOUT THE SALMON

August 14th, 2018 by Budd

Are the Salmon in Lake Huron making a comeback? We get asked this a lot lately and there are definitely signs showing that there are some being caught. This is by no means even close to the amount of fish we had 10 or so years ago. But some get caught each day now, and there are some bigs ones too .

Their food source appears to be mainly smelt, and whether or not they will be in good supply year round, (smelt) will determine how successful this advent of Salmon will be. Some customers coming into my store share their stories of success and failure. But right now most Salmon appear to be gourging on smelt.

They all agree that Lake Trout are still easy to catch, and almost all of them say they are fishing at Presque Isle or Rogers City. Very few are fishing Rockport yet.

But I take any sign of Salmon, as a very good sign and hope this is just the beginning of a great fishery again.

Long and Grand lakes continue to produce some nice catches of a variety of fish. The lake levels are low, about 20 or so inches low, due to our very low rain amounts. And this affects fishing. Also boating. But there are enough fish coming out of the lakes to make your efforts well worth trying if you like fishing and catching.

We’re still open here and hope to be able to stay open until about mid Sept if fishing is good and customer participation warrants it.

Hope to see you soon.
