SOME GOOD SIGNS ALREADY

April 30th, 2015 by Budd

This week, my wife and I took a tour around the lakes, and stopped at Shubert creek on the north end of Long Lake to check for spawning fish. The river was so full of suckers we could not begin to count them. The river is not as high as some years, but it is running well, and all those fish in there is a good sign. We usually don’t see the Walleye and Perch during daylight hours, but the others including the Pike will have easy access to spawning, and return to the lake. This stream is closed by the way, to any fishing, during this period from the mouth to Clinton creek, check your fishing guide books for complete details, DNR does watch these spawning areas, and we’re very happy that they do.
I’m hearing from a few lake front owners that there have been some bass boats out there, taking advantage of that new Bass season, more good news.
We took a trip into some wooded areas to look for Morel mushrooms, but the ground appeared way too dry and we also noticed a total lack of any fresh vegetation growing. Last year we picked morels with snow on top of them so there is no rule as to when they will appear, but they do need some moisture right now. Still it was nice being out in the woods, and we will be going back later. Another sign was that were no flies or mosquitoes out, and that is almost always a part of Morel picking.
In this area, we are still seeing frost in the early morning hours, and warmer fronts trying valiantly to push away the cold air.
We look forward to seeing you folks soon, only 2 weeks now, and we’ll be open. Our shop has a new look inside, and we have stocked it very well with a lot of baits, rod and reel combos, and of course, our now legendary Lorie Rigs.

See you soon May 15, 7-5
