Long and Grand lakes are our area lakes, and we are happy to announce two ice fishing contests coming up, both in February.  Feb. 8, is the  Grand Lake association annual ice fishing derby. It starts at 7 am, and lasts until 7 pm. The fish may be measured from 1 pm to 7 pm at the pavilion on the very north end of the lake, on land. There will be beverages and food available. The prizes are donated by area  stores, such as myself, and there are many prizes available for perch, walleye, and pike. There is no entry form to fill out or a fee.

The second ice fishing event is the annual Reel Fun Ice Derby, also on Grand Lake, FEBRUARY 15. This is the 1,000 hole extravaganza, that gives away a quad, and about 50 excellent prizes donated by businesses. Shanties, power augers, electronics, and many many other prizes are given away. This contest requires you to pay $25.00 to enter, and tickets are available at Bucks Bait shop. For  more information, log onto Reel  Fun Ice fishing, Alpena, and you’ll get all the details. The event takes place from 12 to 3, and is in an arena with pre-drilled holes. You must select and be given a hole to fish from, one per ticket. This is a secure, monitored tournament, with specific rules to follow. But it is designed to be a lot of fun for the whole family. Just buying a ticket, enters you into a flat screen TV giveaway.

About the ice conditions. We have  very good ice, but what is on top of the ice is a problem right now. Slush, and snow. We are hoping that the harsh winds and very cold temperatures we are now experiencing, will stiffen the slush, and produce a great ice platform to fish from. A severe cold front is forecast for the next 2 weeks. Single digit highs, and sub zero lows, may very well put these lakes back into prime fishing conditions.
